Military recruitment now has to start at kinder garden

Montreal, August 29, 2010 / The Coalition Against Military Recruitment in Schools denounces the new recruitment practices of the army among young people at a very early age. The members of the Coalition, Teachers’ unions, student associations and citizens’ organizations condemn especially recruitment initiatives in primary schools for during the Canadian Naval centennial.

Member organizations of the Coalition Against Military Recruitment in Quebec Educational Institutions, namely the Centre de resources sur la non-violence, the Centrale des syndicates du Quebec (CSQ), the Féderation nationale des enseignantes et enseignants du Québec (FNEEQ-CSN), l’Association pour une solidarité syndicale étudiante (ASSÉ) and the Féderation étudiante collégiale du Québec (FECQ), held a press conference to denounce recruitment practices by the Canadian Army in secondary schools, junior colleges and universities in Quebec.

Military research is being done in most universities. In science and engineering departments it is for developing weapons and other military technologies, while with social science professors it is for publicizing opinions that can influence the public in favor of the military’s positions. It is a problem of ethics and democracy that poses a threat to the integrity and independence of the post-secondary education system.

The national campaign against military recruitment in teaching establishments has been launched in Quebec in 2007. It consists in informing people as to what a military career is about, to end the presence of the army in schools and to denounce massive investments in military industry at the expense of education.
